Interventional Cardiology

Heart catheterizations can be done on an outpatient or inpatient basis. At the core of our catheterization and interventional cardiology program is our commitment to ensure that patients are cared for using the newest, most effective treatments.

Patients with critical blockages, poor underlying heart function or other illnesses that make treating heart problems difficult are now able to undergo interventional procedures which would have been considered high-risk just a few years ago.

Our Cardiologists have played a major role in the development of breakthrough interventional procedures, including coronary, peripheral and carotid angioplasty and stenting. We are the only hospital in the region to have performed procedures under research protocols prior to Food and Drug Administration approval. In some instances, our results have been used as part of the process to obtain FDA approval.

St. Joseph Heart Institute interventional procedures include:

  • Coronary angioplasty and stenting including drug eluting stents
  • Peripheral vascular angioplasty and stenting
  • Cardiac brachytherapy
  • Intravascular coronary ultrasound
  • Balloon valvuloplasty for aortic valve blockages
  • Adjunctive thrombolysis
  • Innovative combination procedures tailored to treat special needs
  • Peripheral directional atherectomy
  • Carotid angioplasty and stenting
