Pediatrics

Four months of inpatient and one month of outpatient pediatrics is required.

Residents on inpatient Pediatrics Rotation will cover both the pediatrics floor and the nursery. No vacation or educational leave may be taken by residents during scheduled time on Inpatient Pediatrics.

Responsibilities on the Pediatrics Unit include:

  • Admission, management, and discharge of all FPC, Community Clinic, and unassigned pediatric patients admitted to the Peds floor. Rounds will be conducted with the Family Practice or Pediatric Attending on Service. Residents are responsible for dictation of both the admission H&P and Discharge summaries within one week of completion of rotation. Structural exams must be done on all patients, including newborns.
  • Admission, co-management, and discharge of all private pediatric patients. Rounds will be conducted with private attendings daily, unless the number of patients on the residents’ service becomes excessive (>5 patients/resident)
  • Evaluation of FPC pediatric patients in the ER and private pediatric patients in the ER at the private attending's request.
Nursery Duties Include:
  • Admission H&P on all newborn FPC babies and unassigned babies, daily management and rounds with the attending and discharge planning.
  • Visiting with new mothers daily.
  • Circumcisions as requested.
  • EPSDT when appropriate.
All residents become certified in neonatal resuscitation and PALS early on in their training.
