Barium Enemas
What is a Barium Enema?
The Barium Enema study is performed to evaluate the colon or large bowel. The enema is a barium mixture delivered through a lubricated
plastic tube which is inserted into the rectum. The colon is then able to be visualized with the aid of a fluoroscope (an x-ray machine which
allows the radiologist to observe the enema as it is being administered.) A technologist will assist the radiologist and then take several radiographs
(images).
What must I do to prepare?
In order to ensure the success of the study, it is essential that the colon be as clear as possible. The following instructions will help to clear the
digestive tract in preparation for the enema.
- Eat a low residue diet (no red meats, fresh fruit or vegetables) if possible, two days before the study.
- Drink one full glass of water at 1, 3, 7 and 10 p.m. on the day before the study.
- Drink one bottle of citrate of magnesia (cold) at 8 p.m. the night before the study.
- Take four ducolax tablets by mouth at 10 p.m. the night before the study. Do not chew the tablets.
- On the morning of the study, drink 1 and a glasses of water and insert one ducolax suppository rectally 3 hours prior to the exam.
- Do not eat solid food after midnight. Studies which require fasting are scheduled during the morning hours. If you are taking
medication, you may continue to do so. If you are diabetic, please consult your physician about your diet and your diabetic medication.
When and where should I report for my examination?
We have reserved a time for your examination, so it is important that you be prompt. It is suggested you arrive at the hospital at least
20 minutes before your scheduled imaging procedure to register in the Patient Access Department . Patient Access is located on the first
floor of the hospital to the left of the main hospital lobby. You will then be directed to the Radiology Department located on the first floor
of the Diagnostic and Therapeutic area of the medical center. After you have arrived in the Radiology Department a technologist will escort you to a
dressing booth where you will change into a hospital gown in preparation for your study.
How long will the study take?
Generally, a barium enema will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. However, it is advisable that you allow at least 1 1 / 2
hours since all images must be reviewed by the radiologist before you leave.
Is there anything I must do during the study?
The procedure is performed by a radiologist and technologist who will ask you to do several things during your study such as:
- Hold your breath.
- Assume certain positions in order to visualize specific areas.
As with any type of enema, there is some discomfort, so it is essential that you follow any instructions given to you. This will minimize the
amount of time required to perform the study. As soon as all images are taken, you will be directed to the bathroom at which time you may
release the enema. Additional images are occasionally needed.
When will I know the results?
After the imaging procedure is completed, the radiologist will review your images and your doctor will be mailed the results.
