1939

The years slipped by with their everyday problems and solutions. One of the outstanding events was the visit of Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of the United States. A lecture given by Mrs. Roosevelt was sponsored by our Auxiliaries. Mrs. Roosevelt proved to be as charming as she was so often described, and her warm smile made many friends for her here. the First Lady was intensely interested in good health care, especially the health care of children. Mrs. Roosevelt felt that the hospitals in the District of Columbia should be models for all other American Cities.

The gift of an Iron Lung was a much valued piece of equipment. The lung is used for patients with respiratory problems and paralysis. At the time it was presented to the Hospital, the iron lung was the only one of its kind in Berks County. We were happy to lend it to other hospitals in the vicinity when it was needed.
