Doctor Paul Craig announced that he was eligible for the establishing o f a Residency in Ophthalmology. The Residency would be given to Doctor Craig, not the Hospital, as it would include work for the Resident in the other two Hospitals in the area.

During 1948, plans for expansion continued but the rising cost of commodities and construction and the diminishing value of the dollar were to be considered. It had been said that the hospitals in Berks County were eligible for Federal Aid for construction purposes. A Committee of the Board of Trustees went to Harrisburg to meet with the men in the Department of Health who were allocating funds for construction. The Committee was requested to fill out an application; later St. Joseph Hospital did received Federal Funds for the construction of the addition to the Nurses’ Residence.
