In spite of the lack of funds, the utmost economy and good management made it possible to purchase equipment and provide some very badly needed repairs. In 1933, the Country was still feeling the effects of the Depression years – charity patients both outpatient and inpatients increased, but services to the patients did not lessen.
The Community Chest of Reading and Berks County allocated $52,500 to the Hospital for the period of 1933-1934. Berks County Commissions also contributed $10,000 a year toward the cost of charity patients. The utmost economy was practiced and the Hospital was able to buy a few pieces of much needed equipment.
