With the unrest in Europe, Reading, like other cities in the United States, was quietly making plans for defense in the event that we became involved – and we did become drastically involved on December 7, 1941 – “That day of infamy,” as is was named by President Roosevelt. The war touched us closely as Doctors, Nurses and Employees left to join the Armed Forces. The Auxiliaries planned a Defense Ball to aid in the purchase of defense equipment which they hoped would never be needed.
